Caring for your teeth is a must at all ages, but the importance of taking care of our dental health increases as we grow older.

Challenges In Senior Dental Health

As we grow older, we are more susceptible to dry mouth, gum disease, and other oral health issues. These problems can be made worse by preexisting health conditions. It is important that you see a dentist twice a year to keep an eye on your teeth and gums. Many medications prescribed for things like diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, arthritis, depression, dementia, and cancer can come with the side effect of a dry mouth. When you have a dry mouth, you are more likely to have issues with cavities and gum disease. Diabetes is known to make you higher risk for dental decay and periodontal disease. Ensuring you receive proper dental care, keep these risks at bay. Another challenge older adults face in regard to seeing a dentist, is the loss of employer provided insurance and health benefits after retirement. Paying for dental care out of pocket can get costly, and Medicare may only cover necessary procedures. The lack of insurance provides a barrier for some adults in seeing the dentist. However, not seeing the dentist regularly puts your health at risk.

Basic Dental Care For Seniors

Experiencing dry mouth and gum recession is more common as you get older, and can put you at higher risk for issues with cavities and gum disease.

To help combat these issues, and take good dental care of your mouth you should do the following:

  • See your dentist every six months.
  • Brush twice daily, or after meals. If you can’t brush right away, opt for chewing sugar-free gum.
  • Contact your dentist whenever you have concerns about your dentures, implants, crowns, and bridges.
  • Keep dental insurance to help you cover oral health care – seek support in finding an affordable plan.
